James Rowan, Winemaker
Although quietly spoken, James’ passion for making great wine is clear for all to see. Not one to ‘beat the drum,’ James works tirelessly and studiously throughout each vintage, nurturing firstly the grapes, then the juice and ultimately the wine through its various stages of evolution and development. After finishing his BSc. at Auckland, James completed a post graduate diploma (Viticulture and Oenology) at Lincoln University in Canterbury. With a strong desire to understand how vineyard management impacts on final wine quality, James spent time working in and managing vineyards in the Wairarapa and Marlborough for several years before moving to Auckland to further his winemaking career. Three vintages at Delegats were followed by a stint making wine for various wineries on Waiheke Island before making the move to West Brook. With more than 10 years of vineyard management and winemaking experience with a variety of New Zealand wineries, James brings to West Brook a unique and complementary skill set matched by few in the industry. His commitment to
quality combined with his knowledge and experience makes him an integral member of the West Brook winemaking team.
